CAMBRIDGE -- Sounds of excitement and fun, along with the aroma of barbecue cooking, filled the air Wednesday in the 600 block of Pine Street during the Pine Street Committee's (PSC) second annual Summer Fun Carnival.
Children from ages three to thirteen enjoyed activities like jumping rope, football tossing, crafts, chalk art, and a relay race, and participated in games like hopscotch and four squares. The group of youngsters that numbered around 100 came from the summer programs of PSC, New Beginnings Youth and Family Services (NBYFS), Visions Learning Center and Waugh United Methodist Church.
Charlene Jones of NBYFS said, "I'm glad to have the children of our program come out and get some fresh air, run around and enjoy some fun."
"We would like to be able to do this every year," said Octavene Saunders, Director of the PSC summer youth program. She said the carnival did not cost taxpayers anything and she thanked all those who volunteered.
She added, "The carnival was sponsored by the PSC, Dorchester Elks Lodge 223, and some parents and grandparents who have volunteered have helped us to get this together."
The Elks Lodge supplied all the food, cooking, and refreshments free of charge.
Ria Jones, a mother of four, was one of the parents on hand to help with the carnival. She said she volunteers with the PSC for her children. "It's a good opportunity for me because I have a young one at home and it gives him a chance to come out and be around the kids.
"The boys and girls are learning because there are different activities to do and the programs give them a chance to get out of the house, instead of being stuck in a house all summer long with nothing else to do. It's a great opportunity for them to get out and be with other kids when they are not in school," she said.
