Why are Jake and Joe black snakes?

Why don't we see the Keeper of the Pond?

Why so many snakes?

I ask God what to write about and what puppets and props to use.

Most of the scenes are shot from the outside or inside of my house. Pond scenes are currently being shot at the Choptank River which borders Cambridge. One location is opposite of Pink's Pond. I did not use Pink's Pond for the stories because it looked too "humanized" to me, and I wanted a more natural look. Another location would be portions of Cambridge Creek where there is grass growing on the shore. Where a hill might be required, most likely I would shoot at Sailwinds Park East in Cambridge.

Black snakes are non-poisonous and helpful to farmers. It was a habit for us to pray with our boys at bedtime, and I would tell them stories, which eventually turned to snake stories since snakes were prevalent in the area and somewhat amusing. So, Jake and Joe, black snakes, popped into my mind and they were the first puppets Dorcas, my wife, made for evangelism and Christian education work.

The Keeper of the Pond is sometimes mentioned in the stories, but he is never visible. This is in part to support the truth in a child's mind that "God is a spirit" (John 4:24). Each day we adults believe - commit to - things we do not see: electricity, enclosed combustion, oxygen and more. The intent is to have a character somewhat like Jesus Christ, "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory." -- 1 Peter 1:8

Snake puppets are easy to make. Their usage in Christian education work is intended to imply to the child that all creation is under submission to God, even fearsome snakes.
