It’s Like Riding a Bike

By Peter P. Macinta

We were without a car from June 4 to June 30, 2010 so there were times that if I needed to go somewhere more quickly than walking and not wanting to pester anyone for a ride I used my bicycle.

Most people have ridden a bicycle and perhaps a motor cycle. Even if you have never ridden one of these you can notice something that you can apply to your walk with God--if you are walking with Him.

While riding a bicycle requires keeping one’s balance, it also requires one to keep moving forward. This means one has to use their feet and push down on the foot peddles. If you stop peddling, you can coast for a time but at some point unless you start peddling again your bike will slow down to a point whereby you and the bike will lean to the right or the left and you will put your foot on the ground (unless you would like to topple over).

It is sort of like that in the Christian walk. Everything has been provided for the true disciple to keep them on the Way to the eternal Kingdom of God. One just has to keep moving forward. We are to persevere.

While we are not saved by works, if one is truly born again through Christ, out of love for the One Who took our just punishment we are to move forward in Him and by Him in obedience to the written Word and the Word directly spoken to us by His Holy Spirit. And we must endeavor to keep moving forward.

It is written in Philippians 2:12-13, “So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.”

And, Hebrews 12:1-2, “Why seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Indeed, out of love for Christ and by His strength, if you are a true Christian keep going and enter His eternal Kingdom.

"O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates and thy gates of rubies, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD, and great shall be the peace of thy children." --- Isaiah 54:11-13
